Rihanna Earn Extra Album Sales From Prison

>> Who knew that labels could actually cash in on prisoners – a new demographic ! According to a recent Billboard story, record labels have picked up more than $5 million from federal, state and local prison systems since 2003. Although that figure may seem small, Bob Paris of North Hollywood-based Pack Central says "I have dodged every conventional bullet that has hit most music retailers," Paris says. "I don't have to worry about downloading, legal or illegally.” Paris’Pack Central, which runs a mail order operation for about 50,000 prisoners has been doing very well especially with the release of this year’s biggest albums including Lil Wayne’s “The Carter III,” Mariah Carey’s “E=MC2,” Lyfe Jennings “Life Change,” Rihanna’s “Good Girl Gone Bad” and Usher’s “Here I Stand,” which are all on the companies best sellers list. Cassettes account for about 60% of unit sales, since CDs are contraband in many prisons because the hard plastics can be used for nefarious means. The screws that hold many cassettes together are also verboten, so owner Bob Paris must manually remove them. Paris says he started stockpiling cassettes five years ago. "People thought I was nuts when I invested tons of money in analog prerecorded music on tape," he says. Pack Central sends out its catalog twice a year, with monthly mailers featuring new titles. Prisoners pay for product through money orders or checks drawn on a spendable trust account set up by their family members. Given the harsh business climate for music retailers, Paris is thrilled that his business has been flat for the last five years, with sales hitting more than $1 million annually, it stocks about 10,000 CDs and 5,000 cassette titles. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, more than 2.3 million people were locked up in federal, state or local systems at midyear 2007.

The other day I wore a black T-shirt, black Nobody jeans, a brown leopard-print belt by Dolce & Gabbana, and brown Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, and it looked awesome. Also the rule about not matching your makeup to your outfit. I do that onstage, matching red lipstick to a bright red jacket or neon-pink eye shadow to a pink jumpsuit. And I also love to mix prints. We've had the Meg, the Jennifer, and now people ask for the Rihanna at salons. Will you be switching it up again?

RiRi Rocks This Year’s Fashion Rocks Lineup

>> Fergie must have never heard the old adage about not repeating the same fashion — because she’s set to perform at Condé Nast’s Fashion Rocks for the third year running this fall. Fergie Ferg won’t be the only repeat offender. The Black Eyed Peas, who joined her on one song two years ago, will also headline along with Beyoncé, who headlined in 2006 too. Also coming back to the Fashion Rocks stage are Mariah Carey (who headlined in 2005) and Rihanna (who performed with Elton John in 2006). But this year’s show will have some new energy from the likes of Justin Timberlake, Duffy, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne for the event’s fifth anniversary. Keith Urban and Kid Rock are also on the bill. The concert will take place September 5 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and will be taped as a two-hour program to air four nights later, September 9, on CBS. Proceeds from the event will benefit Stand Up to Cancer.

>> Singer Rihanna is set to front luxury goods label Gucci's UNICEF campaign, whose products will benefit the charity. The 20-year-old "Umbrella" hitmaker will appear in the ads for the "Tattoo Heart" campaign. Creative director Frida Gianinni apparently sought her out to front the campaign after seeing her at a UNICEF fundraiser earlier this year. The campaign includes a special limited edition of selected Gucci items. A quarter of the sales would be donated to the charity. Meanwhile, Rihanna has recorded a duet with singer Ciara, "Tears Fall," for her new album scheduled to come out in November.

She continued the uproar by reeling out hits from all her albums, including “Turn Me On Boy,” “Shut Up and Drive” and a rendition of Bob Marley’s “This is Love.” She closed with her biggest hit to date, “Umbrella,” joined by Jay-Z on stage. Jay-Z, who was performing for the second time at the THISDAY Music and Fashion Festival, stayed on and proved why he has remained a favorite of music lovers in Nigeria over the years. He performed hits like “Show Me What You Got,” and a one sided rendition of “Crazy in Love,” since Beyonce didn’t make the trip. Up next Usher, who had the audience eating from the palm of his hands with his popular hits and incredible footwork as he danced on the stage. His latest “Love In The Club” sent event-goers wild as they sang and dance with him. On the negative note, Usher’s performance was temporarily marred by violence when a fight broke out in the crowd, according to reports. No one was seriously injured.

My photographer Freddy O caught up with the star crossed lovers at Club Miami. He said he told Rihanna that we here at Sandrarose.com love her and appreciate what she’s done to turn the music industry around. Fred said her only response was to smile. Where’s the gratitude? Anyway, once inside the club, Fred was allowed to take all the pics he wanted of CB - but not Rihanna. Not to be outdone, Fred patiently waited for them to leave and then got the “money shots” of the couple strolling to their car. (+ 12)
